Anyone who has parked in a Chatsworth lot in August knows how hard our sun is on a car. Dashboards crack, headlights haze, and paint fades. So it makes sense that one of the first things customers ask us about PPF is how long it will hold up out here.
The good news is that modern film is built for exactly this kind of climate. Here is what to expect and how to get every year out of it.
The short answer
Quality paint protection film lasts around ten years, and most of the major film brands back that with a ten year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking, bubbling, and peeling. That warranty applies here in Southern California just like anywhere else.
For most people that is longer than they keep the car, which means the paint underneath stays protected for the entire time they own it.
Why modern film handles our heat so well
Older clear bra films from years ago could turn yellow in the sun. Today the films we install are made from urethane with UV stabilizers built right in, so they stay clear. The film also blocks UV from reaching the paint, which slows the fading and oxidation you see on cars that live outside.
Heat actually helps in one way. The top coat on quality film is self healing, which means light swirls and wash marks flatten back out when the film warms up. A sunny afternoon in the Valley does a lot of that work for you.
How to get the most years out of your film
Wash the car regularly by hand with a pH neutral soap. Bird droppings, bugs, and sap are easy to wipe off film, and taking care of them quickly keeps the top coat looking perfect.
Parking in a garage or under cover whenever you can is the single best thing for any car in our climate, and it helps the film stay glossy longer too. If you park outside at work in Chatsworth, Northridge, or Canoga Park, you are still well protected. Covered parking is just a nice bonus.
When you use a pressure washer, keep the nozzle a couple of feet back and avoid spraying straight into the film edges. Adding a ceramic coating on top of the film makes the whole car easier to clean and adds another layer of UV protection.
Why the install makes a difference in the heat
Heat puts stress on film edges, so how those edges are finished matters a lot here. At WRPD we wrap the film around the panel edges by hand wherever the panel allows it, rather than cutting it flat on the paint. Wrapped edges hold tight through summer after summer and do not collect dirt.
We also prep every panel carefully before the film goes on. Clean, decontaminated paint gives the adhesive the best possible bond, which is what keeps the film looking invisible for years.
Signs it is time for fresh film
After many years of service, film will eventually show its age with a duller finish or worn edges on the areas that take the most hits. When that happens, we can remove the old film and lay down fresh film, and the paint underneath looks just like the day the first install went on.
That is really the beauty of PPF. The film takes the sun, the chips, and the wear, and your factory paint stays preserved underneath.

Common questions
Will PPF turn yellow in the California sun?+
Modern films have UV stabilizers and are warrantied against yellowing, so quality film stays clear. The older films that yellowed are not what we install.
Does PPF protect paint from sun fading?+
Yes. The film blocks UV from reaching the paint, which helps slow fading and oxidation on cars that spend a lot of time outside.
Should I get a ceramic coating on top of my PPF?+
It is a great combination. The coating makes the film easier to clean, adds gloss, and gives another layer of UV protection.
Can I wash my car right after a PPF install?+
We recommend waiting about a week so the film fully settles. After that, regular hand washes are perfect.
