Most people think of paint protection film as something you put on and forget about. That is true, but it is also one of the best ways to change how your car looks. At our Chatsworth shop we install both gloss and matte film, and each one gives the car a completely different personality.
Here is how each finish looks in person and how to pick the one that fits your car.
Gloss PPF: your factory paint, only better
Gloss film is optically clear with a high shine top coat. On a proper install it looks just like fresh clear coat, and on darker colors it can actually add depth and pop. This is the choice for anyone who loves the way their car looks and wants to keep it that way.
Gloss film has the same self healing top coat, rock chip protection, and stain resistance as every quality film we install. It simply keeps the finish you already have.
Matte PPF: a satin look with no paint
Matte film, sometimes called satin or stealth film, has a textured top coat that knocks down the reflection. When it goes over gloss paint, the whole car takes on a smooth satin finish. Colors look richer and more modern, and body lines stand out in a whole new way.
The best part is that nothing about your paint changes. There is no respray, no permanent commitment, and your factory gloss paint is protected underneath the entire time. If you ever want the gloss look back, the film can be removed.
Protecting a car that is already matte
If your car came from the factory with a matte or frozen finish, matte PPF is the perfect match. Factory matte paint cannot be polished or buffed without ruining the finish, so a scratch or stain is a much bigger deal than on gloss paint. Matte film keeps that finish exactly as it came from the factory while protecting it from chips, bird droppings, and scuffs.
How to choose between the two
If you want the car to look the way it did on the showroom floor, go gloss. If you want the car to stand out in the lot and look like a custom build without the commitment of a paint job, go matte. Matte looks especially good on black, gray, white, and dark blue cars, and it works beautifully on exotics and trucks alike.
Some customers mix both. A gloss car with matte accents on the hood or roof, or a matte body with gloss trim, gives a custom look that is completely reversible. We are happy to bring sample panels out to your car so you can see both finishes on your actual paint.
Caring for each finish
Gloss film cleans up like any well kept paint. Matte film is just as easy but has one simple rule: skip waxes, polishes, and anything that adds shine, since those can leave glossy patches. A matte safe soap and a soft wash mitt keep it looking perfect. A ceramic coating made for matte finishes is a great way to make it even easier to maintain.

Common questions
Does matte PPF protect as well as gloss PPF?+
Yes. Both finishes offer the same rock chip protection, self healing top coat, and stain resistance. The only difference is the look.
Can matte PPF be removed later?+
Yes. The film comes off cleanly from factory paint, and your original gloss finish is right there underneath.
Is matte PPF a good alternative to a satin wrap?+
It is a great option if you like your current color and just want a satin look. It is clear, so your paint color shows through, and it adds real impact protection.
Can I see matte film before I decide?+
Of course. Bring the car to our Chatsworth shop and we will show you sample panels right on your paint.
